About Us -> Why Giving Answers?

Giving Answers, LLC formed in 2001 to help build the organizational capacity of nonprofit organizations. Through alternative learning and technology services, organizations can identify unique, affordable methods of building an effective Web presence, with useful tools to manage donor relations, volunteer opportunities and Web-content development. Through our learning services, individuals learn core management practices tailored specifically to the nonprofit sector.  Both our technology and learning services emphasize the importance of deploying resources strategically to fulfill the organization’s mission and meet its goals.

We believe that management of nonprofit organizations has special requirements both in function and in structure.  From the relationship between executives and boards to the legal structure and the ways in which income is generated and monies accounted for, nonprofit are different from both government and business.  Moreover, there is a different set of expectations about what constitutes appropriate purposes and behavior for these organizations, which if violated can cause significant problems.

Therefore, managers of nonprofit organizations must have the knowledge base and skills of administrators, but they must also have additional, distinctive skills and understandings to lead and manage nonprofit organizations effectively.  Given the growing restraints on government's capacities to address critical social problems and human needs, our society has turned more and more to nonprofit organizations for services and solutions.

The nonprofit sector has grown quickly over the last decade, increasing demand for capable staff and leadership.  At the same time, our country’s economic downturn has put significant pressure on executives to manage more strategically.  They have had to learn to collaborate with other organizations (often across sectors), compete for limited resources, motivate and retain a workforce in constant flux, and demonstrate meaningful, sustainable outcomes for their constituents. This is at once a daunting task and an exhilarating opportunity.

Recent research from several major cities identifies an employment trend where most new hires for executive director positions are first-time executives, learning the role and building supportive networks in real time.  These reports underscore the importance of strengthening the nonprofit manager's capacity to lead and manage in order to sustain critical services and move communities forward. It is our hope and dream that the technology and learning services we provide will help.
