What is "Online Learning"?
Giving Answers Online for nonprofit managers, staff and volunteers and its courses in board development and nonprofit governance are taught in an online learning environment.  We offer courses and programs that you can participate in any time of day or night; from anywhere you have a computer with Internet access, such as work, home, or the library.  As an online student you will be taught under rigorous academic standards as traditional classroom programs, yet, everything needed to take a course is online and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

With Giving Answers Online, you can learn at your convenience: Anytime, Anywhere.  No need to rush to class after work, or take the day off to attend a seminar.  Giving Answers Online offers the convenience you need to make professional development a part of your busy life.  Our virtual classroom operates on an "asynchronous" basis, rather than a fixed time.  You can log on to the course web site when it fits your schedule: at six in the morning, your lunch hour, or ten at night. You can access the course web site from any computer with Internet access.  No special software is needed.  Whether you are traveling on business or taking a vacation, you can go to class from the local cyber cafe, hotel business center or personal laptop.   Each course has the following features:

  • Discussion/debate forums.
  • Faculty-student interactions via Internet, e-mail, and phone.
  • Materials accessed directly from the Web, including course readings.
  • An e-mail directory, online bulletin boards, and online chats as standard class features.

  2. How do I register for an Online Course? (top)
Just follow the instructions that accompany each course listing.

 3. How do I access student-only area for a class I am registered for? (top)
Go to http://www.ga-online.com/login.htm (currently disabled).  Enter your email address and password, to access your student page.  Find your class and tap on the "student-only" link.  In some cases, you'll be asked for a username and password, which would have been emailed to you when you registered for the class.

  4. Why Professional Development Training? (top)
Current economic and political conditions signal an expanded scope for nonprofit organizations.  There is every indication that nonprofits will best succeed in meeting their missions through effective leadership and organizational capacity building.  Increased pressures on nonprofits are anticipated and more efficient management will be demanded within the nonprofit sector.

Further, many nonprofit staff and volunteer leaders have worked their way through the ranks of a specialized discipline without the benefit of managerial training to prepare them for responsibilities in the areas of finance, marketing, program evaluation, human resources management, strategic planning, resource development, social entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, and governing board/executive/staff relations.

There are increasing opportunities for managers in the expanding nonprofit sector.  In 1996, nearly 11 million people were employed in the nonprofit sector; approximately 7% of the U.S. total employment. This was more than the number employed in construction, transportation and communication, finance, insurance, real estate or agriculture.

  6. Are you adding new courses to your offering? (top)
Yes!. At present, there are at least 30 nonprofit consultants developing programs and we anticipate adding them to our roster over the next few weeks.  We are always looking to add new courses to our inventory of programs and would welcome your participation.   If you are interested in facilitating a course, please email us at onlinelearning@givinganswers.com or fill out our online form today.

  7. Do I need to enroll as a student to take a course? (top)
No.  Sign-up for your classes online.   No need to print out registration forms, send in faxes or mail the registration - just go to our registration page, fill out the classes you want to take and you will be instantly registered in the courses.

  8. Who facilitates the courses? (top)
Our facilitators are a diverse group of academics and practitioners, all of whom have extensive experience working with not-for-profit organizations. Our facilitators are encouraged to draw on the wealth of experience participants bring to the online learning environment to reinforce participant learning and build strong networks among peers.  In this way, Giving Answers Online has instant, positive impact on the agencies it serves.

  9. Why Giving Answers Online? (top)

Collaborate with Nonprofit peers beyond the borders of your own community.  Through the Giving Answers Online, you will get to know nonprofit managers from all over the country.  You will exchange ideas with new and experienced practitioners from many different types and sizes of nonprofits.  All participants bring real world experiences, no matter what part of the world they're from.

Compare the cost of many one-day seminars with our intensive five-week classes. That's 35 days of new ideas, best practices, networking and lessons learned from other practitioners, links to online resources, and a unique opportunity for reflection on your own experience.  Remember, too, that not all online courses are created equal.  Many self-paced online programs promise interaction, but it is only between you and the computer.  We offer interaction with an experienced instructor-facilitator and a diverse group of peers.
