Developing an Ethics Program: A Case Study for Nonprofit Organizations (Booklet)

Charles E.M. Kolb (National Center for Nonprofit Boards, 1999)
Today's nonprofits operate in an era of accountability. When a nonprofit's reputation is damaged, it's not easy to recover the public's trust. Set against the United Way of America scandal of the early 1990s, author Charles Kolb, former general counsel for the United Way of America, discusses the process the organization undertook in creating its ethics program and describes how to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise a code of ethics. Board members will learn how having an ethics program can help clarify and communicate the organization's values to staff, board, funders, and the general public and the importance of having organization-wide acceptance of the code in order for it to be effective. Also included is full text of the United Way of America code of ethics and a discussion of various ethics code provisions. Softcover, 24 pages, $16 (Nonmember), $12 (Member)
