This is a private, nonprofit organization of volunteers from the communications industries who conduct advertising campaigns for the public good. It provides public service announcements that address health issues, education, public safety, substance abuse, community service, and environmental concerns. The Ad Council uses the power of advertising to stimulate action against the problems confronting Americans today. We are joined in this mission by the media, the advertising industry, the business world, and the nonprofit community. Every year they produce more than 35 campaigns on issues like education, preventive health, community well-being, environmental preservation, and strengthening families. For a campaign to be selected it must be noncommercial, nondenominational, nonpolitical, and significant to all Americans. The Ad Council’s general operating expenses are funded by donations from over 300 corporations, foundations, and constituent organizations. The nation’s top ad agencies do the creative work pro bono. Marketing executives donate their time and expertise. The media donate millions of dollars in time and space for Advertising Council messages. Since 1987, the Community Action Network (CAN) has been recognizing exemplary public service efforts conducted by the media, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and individuals through its CAN Public Service Award.
