The Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and
Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) is an international, interdisciplinary network
of scholars and nonprofit leaders fostering the creation, application,
and dissemination of research on voluntary action, nonprofit organizations,
philanthropy and citizen participation/civil society. Disciplines include:
Accounting, American Studies, Anthropology, Economics, History, Law, Legal
Studies, Management, Organizational Behavior, Political Science, Psychology,
Public Administration, Public Policy, Religion, Social Work, and Sociology.
Founded in 1971 as the Association of Voluntary Action Scholars, it is
a neutral, open forum committed to strengthening the research community
in the emerging field of nonprofit and philanthropic studies. ARNOVA brings
together both theoretical and applied interests, helping scholars to gain
insight into the day-to-day concerns of third-sector organizations, while
providing nonprofit professionals with research they can use to improve
the quality of life for citizens and communities. Its main forms of outreach
are an annual conference, a variety of publications, and electronic discussions
and seminars.
The Community and Grassroots Associations (CGA) Section of
ARNOVA is a formal subgroup of ARNOVA members interested in community
organizations, grassroots associations, self-help groups, and other phenomena
related to these kinds of groups, such as voluntary associations, all-volunteer
groups, small paid-staff nonprofits, faith-based volunteer groups, volunteerism
in independent groups, volunteer participation and motivation, social
action/advocacy groups, social movement groups, smaller interest groups,
and citizen participation groups. The Section represents the often
neglected and "invisible" part of the voluntary nonprofit sector,
as contrasted with the big, often noticed, paid-staff nonprofit organizations
and nonprofit academic centers. The Section operates an e-mail discussion
Listserv called "CGAP-L" in which any interested person can
participate by notifying Lohmann at rlohmann@wvu.edu.
CGAP-L is used to communicate Section notices and reports as well as to
provide a means for group discussion of relevant issues, research topics,
and documents/publications. Once one is a member, any e-mail message and
subject heading posted to CGAP-L@WVNVM.WVNET.EDU is communicated to about
200 potentially interested participants in the Listserv, including current
Section members.
ARNOVA's Web site includes information about these various
activities, as well as a signup option for an e-mail–based discussion
group. Publishes the Nonprofit
and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (see separate listing under
Periodicals), ARNOVA Abstracts, a directory of researchers indexed by
state and country, academic discipline and research interest, and a quarterly
newsletter for members. A number of special interest groups are developing,
including groups devoted to teaching and curriculum, international and
comparative issues, and community and grassroots associations.
