The Brookings Institution established the Center for
Public Service in 1999 to improve the odds that America's most talented citizens will choose
careers in public service. Toward that goal, the Center is committed to
rigorous research and practical recommendations for making public service
more attractive, be it in traditional government settings, nonprofit agencies,
or in the growing number of private firms that provide services once delivered
inside government. The Center for Public Service is composed of Senior
and Visiting Fellows, Guest Scholars, and Staff. The Center's research
program focuses on two broad questions: What is the state of the public
service today, in all three sectors—government, nonprofit and private—and
how has it changed over time? How can government and nonprofits attract
and keep talent? The Center pursues a sustained research program using
methods that are understandable, or at the very least easily explained,
while generating findings that are easily interpreted and clearly linked
to real-world circumstances. Based on this research, the Center is developing
a pragmatic and nonpartisan agenda for changing the way government, nonprofits,
and the private sector attract and keep talented Americans in the public
service.
