Duke University's Center for the Study of Philanthropy and Voluntarism was created in 1986 in order to provide such serious attention.  It is housed within the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, an academic unit of the university that has an interdisciplinary research program and offers a professional master's degree in public policy analysis and management as well as an undergraduate major in public policy.  The Center has three major objectives: to support scholarly research on issues related to philanthropy and voluntarism, to stimulate the exchange of ideas and research findings among scholars and practitioners, and to encourage the development of university courses in the area of philanthropy. Not only does the Center support research by faculty, it also assists graduate students in dissertation research, research connected to masters’ theses, and free-standing research projects.
