Founded in 1986 to provide an ongoing national forum
for research, discussion, and public education on philanthropic trends;
the Center’s activities are interdisciplinary, focusing on such questions
as participation (who participates and the impact of their decision),
modernization (definitions of community and the manner in which needs
are perceived, defined, and acted upon), and motivation (the subjective
considerations surrounding philanthropic activity); both pure and applied
research are encouraged; emphasis is on three topical areas: the changing
role of philanthropy in the welfare state, giving and voluntarism in New
York, and the international dimensions of these activities. The common
theme uniting these topical areas has been philanthropy and diversity:
giving, voluntarism, and social reform within different groups, cultures,
and subcultures; programs have focused on the activities of women of different
classes, religious, ethnic and minority groups, the gay community, the
aged, male elites, and corporations, policymakers, and activists in Europe
and the developing world; programs include Research, International Fellows
Program, International Clearinghouse and Bibliography Project, conferences,
symposia, research seminars, working papers, and graduate seminars.
