Created in 1987, the Center is dedicated to education,
research, and public service in philanthropy (voluntary action for the
public good, including voluntary giving, voluntary action, and voluntary
association). The Center's Philanthropic Studies faculty is engaged in
building a cumulative research program that contributes to the knowledge
base about philanthropy and the nonprofit sector; developing information
about outcomes of programs and practices; playing a role nationally and
internationally in the definition of philanthropic studies and nonprofit
management; and engaging other scholars and practitioners in the research
and dissemination process through conferences and publications. The IU
Center on Philanthropy conducts, coordinates, and supports research building
a broad base of knowledge about the causes and consequences of philanthropic
behavior involving individuals, communities, and institutions. The Center
seeks to contribute to the knowledge base in the following priority areas
for research: the origins, defining characteristics, and development of
philanthropic traditions across time, cultures, and social groups; the
role of philanthropic and nonprofit organizations in shaping communities
and civil society; the sources, motivations, and practices involved in
generating, allocating, and managing philanthropic resources of time and
money; the types, scope, and composition of philanthropic resources and
their significance for nonprofit organizations and the sector as a whole;
and the governance and management of philanthropic institutions and nonprofit
organizations.
The Center also promotes better public understanding
of the philanthropic tradition, its values, and its practices through
research and publications, hosting seminars and conferences, and publishing
resources including books, bibliographies, and research tools; collaborates
with the 30 other academic programs around the United States devoted to
nonprofit organizations and the voluntary sector in general. The Center
also provides education and training for those involved in philanthropy
including donors, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, foundation
trustees, and volunteers; teaches fundraising extensively at the university
and in workshops for volunteers and staff of nonprofit organizations;
operates the Fundraising School (see separate listing in Professional
Development section). Sponsors the Philanthropy Seminar series to foster
discussion on a wide range of issues and ideas related to philanthropy,
bringing faculty members together with community leaders in business,
government, and the independent sector to explore the relationships between
philanthropy and subjects as diverse as religion, voluntary service, ethics,
nonprofit organizations, women’s roles and perspectives, poverty and wealth,
patronage in the history of science, and literature. Provides grants to
scholars and practitioners engaged in theoretical or applied research,
supports interdisciplinary doctoral research, and awards curriculum development
grants to IU faculty interested in teaching about philanthropy.
The philanthropy library and archives contain a rapidly
growing collection of research materials and two major bibliographic works,
Philanthropic Studies Index (see
separate listing under Periodicals) and Research-in-Progress
in Philanthropy (see separate listing under Publications)
are published at the Center.
