The USC Nonprofit Studies Center works to preserve and strengthen the nonprofit sector through research and public education on philanthropy, volunteerism, and the role of the nonprofit sector in the governance and economy of America's urban communities, using the California experience as a model. The Center achieves this by: stimulating research on issues facing foundations and nonprofit organizations; creating academic–nonprofit partnerships to inform public policy; and building bridges and expanding networks among the philanthropic and nonprofit communities. Planned research and outreach activities include annual forums, convening leading scholars, philanthropic and nonprofit leaders, and civic and corporate citizens to discuss key issues confronting the nonprofit sector, the relevant research, and opportunities for action through public policy, foundation initiatives, corporate philanthropy and nonprofit strategies; Research Projects, tracking trends in philanthropy and volunteerism in California and the size, scope and finances of California's foundations and nonprofit organizations, and publishing research results to be available to the nonprofit community at large; Case Studies, evaluating specific nonprofit organizations and foundation initiatives that represent innovations in service delivery, advocacy, community building and enhanced nonprofit sector capacity, and disseminating lessons learned; Research Seminars, open to the nonprofit community, promoting research on the nonprofit sector, drawing on faculty from USC and other area universities. A working paper series will be published and available to the public through the Center's Web site.
